Nightguards are hard trays typically worn at night and there are various kinds you can choose from. We do not recommend over the counter mouthguards because they typically increase clenching and grinding motions due to their cushy material.
A custom fabricated hard acrylic night guard can be used to distribute the force and reduce the amount of force applied during clenching. Using a NG we can place the mandible in its most superior posterior position, reducing inflammation in the joint and giving muscles of mastication a break.
A night guard cannot eliminate grinding but can reduce the adverse effects on teeth and joints. A well fitting night guard is used to stop recession and sensitivity caused by teeth movement and recession. It can extend the lifespan of dental restorations. All patients with implants must wear a night guard at bedtime.
A night guard is used to treat limited range of motion. This could be caused due to structural damage and can be treated after correct diagnosis.
AM aligners are used in the morning for about 10 to 20 minutes to help with TMJ disc displacement. If a patient all of a sudden cannot bite down without pain in the jaw, usually indicates TMJ disc displacement. By wearing the morning aligner, the disc will have a chance to slip in its place.
AM aligners are also used by snore guard users to place their mandible in the right place, when they wake up in the morning.
